Laundry equipment technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing large-scale commercial and industrial machines, making it an appealing career for those with mechanical aptitude and excellent problem solving and communication skills. Our laundry equipment technicians encounter a variety of challenges and tasks, from setting up utility connections to problem solving equipment issues. Wondering if this job might be right for you? Read on to learn more about what it’s like to work with Western State Design as a commercial laundry equipment technician.
What Are the Duties of a Commercial Laundry Technician?
While exact duties may vary from day to day, a laundry technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial or industrial equipment in coin laundries, hospitals, hotels, sports clubs, spas, and other businesses. They serve as the on-the-ground face and hands of Western State Design, providing exceptional service and support to each of the company’s customers in their assigned territory. Additionally, customers’ varying locations mean you work in different geographic locations, including resort areas.
The varied nature of the job and the different equipment options means no two days look the same. A technician’s daily schedule—set electronically by managers each morning—could involve dismantling and reassembling equipment for installation in hard-to-access on-premise laundry facilities, troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment in a community vended laundry center, or performing preventative maintenance on a large-scale industrial ironer at a commercial laundry.
Other responsibilities of a laundry service technician include training new on-site staff, cleaning machines regularly to remove lint and debris, and inspecting equipment for safety and compliance with local and state standards.
Commercial Laundry Technician Qualifications
In addition to a high school diploma or equivalent education, a laundry technician should have experience in specialized equipment repair and maintenance in trade, technical, or related fields, a strong mechanical and technical aptitude, and the ability to read electrical schematics. Because of the large-scale nature of the equipment with which they’ll work, a technician must be able to lift, push, and move a minimum of 50 lbs. Other qualifications include a drivers license and insurable driving record; technicians must travel throughout their assigned territory each day in a WSD company van to complete service calls.
In addition to these qualifications, a variety of skills can contribute toward success as a commercial laundry equipment technician, including:
- Willingness to learn
- Positive attitude
- Customer service
How Are Technicians Trained?
On-the-job training varies depending on each individual’s experience, but novices often ride along with veteran technicians for hands-on learning. Each technician’s van is fully equipped with the diagnostic equipment, parts, and tools necessary to install, repair, or maintain machines.
